After the most recent meeting I felt it would be a good idea to share my thoughts.
This is a diagram that has come about from some ongoing conversations I have been having with Sam via Liane Gabora. It is my version of a diagram he drew which I feel shows (or at least comes close to showing) the process I would like to explore within my practice. I want to create situations in which this process can occur.
I envisage the best way of doing this would be through the creation of confrontations in which you are presented with the new information. I feel that this would have to be done through the creation of a structures that when entered you make some form of investment (possibly just the act of entering), thus by investing in some way you want to receive something in return. At present I think the best of doing this would be through the creation of gatherings as I feel through the creation of a social dynamic/community/network there can be a forum that engages with and elaborates upon the information. To pull this back to the collaboration, I would say that our meeting are an example of one of these gatherings. I would really like to see one of the results of our collaboration being one of these gatherings.

Lianne Gabora is an exciting speaker, I haven't finished her lecture but it is high my agenda for this evening.
ReplyDeleteTo refer what you have written, does that mean that for you one of the results of the collaboration has been achieved? If so, I would agree with you. Where after that though? A continuation of them? Is the exhibition a description of them? Or is it a description of the experience? In the recording of them, I feel it is important not to dilute the essential integrity of the event. I will return to that concern at the next meeting.
Result speaks too much of finality for me, I aspire towards the creation of an ongoing dialogue. To me the important thing is this dialogue, this sharing of ideas, knowledge and culture, through this we expand our perspectives. I see something that is less of an exhibition as I find exhibition often just present results and more of an open forum/meeting/gathering event. I envisage the creation of a kind of informal social space where dialogue can occur, something in which the audience becomes participant.
DeleteI like this approach. I feel the process is the most important aspect of the work (or in fact is the work). The fact that the audience can participate and develop / expand the work is empowering and could open up all sorts of unusual directions and ideas. I feel that it is important that the audience become part of the work and are not separate from it. It gives them a unique method for understanding, experiencing and exploring the space without the boundaries of a gallery. How else can a work be assimilated without being experienced? I have worded this as I there is a 'them and us' (i.e. the artists & the audience) however, I see all who experience the work as playing both roles with each role fluctuating within the individual as the process evolves.
DeleteApologies Matt, only just got round to reading this...I like how you've distilled these ideas - in terms of both making and acting out. Look forward to unpacking this tonight. Laura
