I have had the idea for this drawing alongside ideas of sculpture on the same theme i.e the actual meetings of the artists for a number of weeks. The strucure and interaction of the event and its weekly basis is my key. Ongoing and fluctuating ideas emerge within the group, words float out of us around the space and elicit reactions that are sometimes spoken and sometimes not. The energies that this kind of collaboration produce are potent and exciting, as the free flow of the ideas create shapes with one contributor or another raising or leveling an ideas' significance or importance. Even when any member cannot attend the group the other members' of the group are meeting to move the process along, this is progressive.
The image is a first draft and the central circular construction represents the work. I have been careful at this stage to make sure that none of the lines actually pierce the central area, this is because I feel that the precipitation of the work is still very much in progress. the lines emerging from the side of the outer shapes with the triangles opposite them, are the flow of ideas coming from each person. The nine outer designs, with the triangles represent the contributors, the design of the communications between each member and the interactions/web/maze are the resultant ideas. The only reason that I have broken into this design and sacrificed it by a verbal dissection, is to share with the group where my concentration was when I was drawing it. By opening up to the group, I hope to move the collaboration to the point where, when I give each member a piece of a material to contribute to a sculpture they are better informed. I have also explained the difficulties that I still face, in expressing in a visual form that which is ethereal, an essence, in many ways a blooming. I have struggled for two years with finding a way/a method/a means, of representing a moral/an ethic/a thought and now an idea. I am absolutely thrilled that I have at least started the process, although there is a lot of development needed.
I may exhibit my notes and the development of this drawing and maybe a sculpture, or none. The fluidity of the process is liberating in that respect. The fact that the momentum of ideas is not stilled by premature decision making allows work ideas/thought lines to blossom.
