Artur Żmijewski/Paweł Althamer - Choices

Choices

  1. Althamer and Żmijewski tackle the problematic phenomena of the 'inevitable' appearance of hierarchies within group activity head on here.

They propose that the participants' conception of the product is the root of the problem. In that, a product implies ownership, ownership makes the art into property and property is antisocial.

In a move which is so delightfully and in this case hilariously antagonistic (a trademark of Żmijewski) the way in which they choose to make this malconception apparent is by burning everyones' artwork.

What I find interesting is that through their intervention they overstep the accepted boundaries for the teacher or the curator, exposing the power dynamics inherent within those relationships.

These issues will affect us too, in our activity.
